Intuition is the opposite of the scientific method
At the risk of sounding like a heretic, please let me explain.
The scientific method demands a meticulous approach, where one must declare your assumptions, collect impartial evidence, and consciously endeavor to eliminate your prejudices from the inquiry. If your theory holds up throughout this rigorous process, then you can draw conclusions.
Intuition, on the other hand, is arriving at a conclusion without any regard for objectivity. Intuitive conclusions are conjured up by the unconscious mind, which is replete with our own biases, musings, and inklings. It is the opposite of the scientific method.
Academics have it both ways. They can conjure up an intuitive hypothesis, and thereafter embark on a nonpartisan investigation to prove it.
Unfortunately, most of the decisions we make don't have this quality. We have to make snap decisions every day, like whether to reprimand our child for not asking as politely as he should, what subject line to use in an urgent email to a potential client, or even whether to dodge an oncoming vehicle we suspect may be losing control.
I believe intuitive conclusions are the best kind of conclusions, though this may be my biases speaking.
